Connecting Via FTP

You will transfer files to your web site via FTP, which is short for File Transfer Protocol. You may also transfer files via FrontPage, which doesn’t require the use of FTP.

The most common method of transferring files to and from your web site is via FTP. There are several stand-alone FTP clients available, and many web design software packages include some type of built-in ftp client.

Common stand-alone clients include:

- FTP Voyager ( http://www.ftpvoyager.com )
- WS_FTP Pro ( http://www.ipswitch.com )
- WS_FTP LE (freeware) ( http://www.ipswitch.com )
- Cute FTP ( http://www.cuteftp.com )

You will need three basic pieces of information to connect via FTP... Your username, password and ftp site. Your username and password were included in your welcome e-mail. The ftp site is accessible via either ftp.domain.com or via your IP address, which was also included in your welcome e-mail. You can ftp to the IP address prior to your domain becoming active or prior to your domain being transferred from another host. This will prevent any downtime since the site will be live prior to the domain becoming active. You can also view your site via http://domain.nt4.ntwebb.com (where domain is your domain without the extension - i.e. .com, .net, .org, .etc) prior to the domain becoming active.

When you first log in, you’ll see a number of directories. For directory structure information, see below.

You will need to delete the default.htm document prior to uploading your site files.

Directory Structure

When you first log in, you’ll see a number of directories. Each has a specific funtion, briefly described below.

db - This is the folder where you will want to upload databases. This directory is not accessible via the web, protecting your database from theft. This is also the only directory which the control panel will setup DSN’s from.

log - Your log files are stored in this directory. We typically keep logs for one month.

Special - You should not need to access this directory as it stores all of your e-mail and related files.

www - This is the only directory (as well as sub-directories) accessible via the web. This would also be referred to as your base directory when FTP’ing files to your site.

You will need to delete the default.htm document prior to uploading your site files.

Default Documents

We have several "default documents" configured for your site. A default document is a html file that the web server will recognize and display without needing to type in the actual page name. We currently have the following default documents configured. We can also add or delete default documents on a case by case basis. Current default documents include: index.htm,.shtml,.html,.asp, .cfm,.wml,.cgi and default.htm,.asp,.shtml,.cfm,.cgi,.wml,.html
