JE2000, LLC has elected to proactively support name-based hosting practices.
IP’s are in short supply and ARIN (who’s responsible for IP allocations) is pushing for name-based hosting and in fact temporarily implemented a policy of not accepting virtual hosting accounts as justification for IP allocation. We feel that ARIN will eventually implement a similar policy, forcing hosts to ip-less hosting, and have elected to proactively conserve IP space prior to any further policy changes by ARIN.
For all intensive purposes, IP based hosting is for the most-part unneccessary. We will continue to provide dedicated IP’s on a limited basis, as justified. Primary needs for dedicated IP’s include sites running a dedicated SSL certificate and for nameservers. Any other requests will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis and may incur additional charges.
IP-less (name-based) hosting has several advantages:
- Server Performance - IP-less sites use approximately 50% fewer resources (primarily memory usage) than a IP based sites. This helps improve server performance by freeing valuable memory for core web serving tasks, rather than maintaining hundreds of IP’s in memory.
- Portability - IP-less based servers can easily be transported between datacenters if the need should arise. Only tens of IP’s would need to be renumbered rather than thousands in a typical IP based senario.
